Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has named the club’s all-time best XI, with current Liverpool players Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah in the squad.
The Reds enjoyed great success in the 1970s and early 1980s, with Carragher’s side in most of their squads, with this one being produce on Sky Bet’s Stick to Football programme.
“I’d go with Ray Clemence over Alisson just a little bit because he’s won so much trophies – right-back Phil Neal or Trent, Steve Nicol could be a good left-back for me. When you think of the players who have played for AC Milan and won four out of the five European Cups and we’ve all said ‘wow’, like the Real Madrid or Barcelona players.”
“Neil has won four European Cups, it’s incredible. When Trent’s career is coming to an end, I might pick him. But I’ll pick Neil because he’s won four European Cups.”
“I’d go with Virgil van Dijk and Alan Hansen – they’d make a great partnership (at centre-back). Andy Robertson could play a part but Liverpool haven’t had an incredible left-back history. Even during their successful spells.”
“I would go with Nicol at left-back. He partnered well with John Barnes in the team in the late 80s. Nicol is a bit like me in that he can play at right-back, centre-back, left-back. But he was brilliant for Liverpool.”
“Graham Souness would play in midfield with Steven Gerrard – there were two options on the right. Before Mo Salah came, Ian Callaghan, he was the only player to have played more games for Liverpool than me. He played 860 games and won two division titles with Liverpool. One of which was his last in the 1977 European Cup final.”
“So you think about the journey of players from UFABET the second division. Local players, but Mo Salah has taken the right-hand side.”
“Kenny Dalglish has to be in the team (as a striker) and Ian Rush has to be in the team because of what he has achieved.”
Carragher’s best Liverpool ever in a 4-4-2 system: Ray Clemence – Phil Neal, Virgil van Dijk, Alan Hansen, Steve Nicol – Mohamed Salah, Graeme Souness, Steven Gerrard, John Barnes – Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush
